IRMA THOMPSON
1917-2019

“I’ll wear out but I won’t rust out”

Irma Thompson

Irma Thompson (formerly Irma Blake) was born May 27th, 1917 in Buena Vista, VA.

Born an only child to parents who emphasized the importance of education, she attended the Buena Vista Colored School during her formative years. Like many other African American students at the time, Mrs. Thompson had to travel out of town to complete her primary schooling and graduate high school. She went on to complete a professional teaching certificate prior to beginning a rewarding career in education in her hometown.

Being born and raised in Buena Vista, Mrs. Thompson's roots ran deep within the town's vibrant fabric. Throughout her professional journey, she worked tirelessly to uplift the students she taught in the Rockbridge County schools. Her expertise in advocacy enabled her to provide invaluable guidance and resources to those in need. Whether it was coordinating community programs, or connecting people with vital services, Mrs. Thompson's unwavering commitment to fostering a better tomorrow was a source of inspiration for all. After retiring from a 35-year career in the classroom, she spent seven years supervising student teachers for Mary Baldwin College and Washington & Lee University.

Beyond her professional endeavors, Mrs. Thompson was an avid volunteer and community leader. She actively participated in local initiatives, serving on various committees, one of which being President of the Colored School Historical Society. She frequently lended her expertise to organizations that strived to enhance the well-being of Buena Vista's residents.

This dedication page serves as a tribute to Mrs. Irma Thompson, a remarkable woman whose unwavering commitment to service and community has made Buena Vista and the surrounding community a better place. Her legacy will continue to inspire future generations to embrace education, empathy, and a strong sense of social responsibility.
