Program Coordinator Position
 

The Rockbridge NAACP Irma Thompson Educators of Color Program is seeking a part-time program coordinator who is available to work on average 20 hours per month (approximately 5 hours a week) at $20/hour. This position has been fully funded through a two-year grant. The position is located in Lexington, Virginia. Except for in-person meetings and job fairs, job duties will be carried out remotely.

● You are passionate about helping people to pursue a career in teaching;
● You are motivated by the Irma Thompson Program’s mission of supporting the
recruitment, retention, and flourishing of educators of color in our area;
● You are excited about working with current and potential teachers, school
administrators, and the Irma Thompson board members and being in a public-facing
role;
● You are flexible and amenable to working with a young organization that is creating
something new from the ground up.

 

WHO WE ARE
The Rockbridge NAACP’s Irma Thompson Educators of Color Program was established in
August, 2020, to support the recruitment and retention of educators of color in Buena Vista,
Lexington, and Rockbridge County, Virginia. The Irma Thompson Board formed in 2022 to
advertise our mission and work, establish deeper connections with local school administrators,
award stipends to educators of color new to our school systems, and learn about and help to
implement more advanced recruitment strategies for teachers in our area. We are also
committed to creating and maintaining professional networks for educators of color in our school
systems.

 

The Program Coordinator’s responsibilities include:
• Establishing and maintaining contact with administrators from regional HBCUs and HSIs, local and regional colleges and universities, and our three public school systems;
• Working with the Irma Thompson Board to devise programs and recruitment strategies for educators of color;
• Attending local and regional job fairs to create a network of contacts and publicize the Irma Thompson Program information;
• Working with the Irma Thompson Board Communications Committee to maintain our publicity flier and brochure, website, and social media; promoting the Program in our
community;
• Attending monthly meetings of the Irma Thompson Board to be a part of discussions and present the Program Coordinator report;
• Other tasks as they arise and are agreed upon.


The Program Coordinator should:
• Hold or be working towards a post-secondary degree (Associate’s, BA, or BS);
• Be comfortable working with a variety of computer software programs, such as Canva.

Every dollar you donate to THE IRMA THOMPSON INITIATIVE goes to further the recruitment and support of teachers of color in Buena Vista, Lexington, and Rockbridge County. 

The fund provides incentives and ongoing support to Black and Brown teachers who join one of our school systems as a full-time teacher or administrator.
